App FAQs
Here are frequently asked questions about the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad app.
- Do I need phone service to download the app? The download of the app requires the internet so plan ahead. We recommend downloading the app before starting your journey.
- Do I need to allow location settings? Once you are ready to begin following the Byway, you must have location services turned on. The app will prompt you to go to settings and activate it for the app. Choose “Always” for location services if you are using an iOS device. This will allow the app to activate stops in the app based on your GPS coordinates.
- Should I use airplane mode? Turn on Airplane Mode to conserve battery power. Otherwise, battery power is consumed on sections of the Byway with no cell service as the phone continually pings for cell service. Airplane Mode forces the phone to use GPS.
- What if I run out of phone battery? A portable battery charger is recommended to ensure you have sufficient battery power to complete the trip.
- Can I use an iPad? If you have an iOS iPad or iPad Mini, the device has GPS only if it was purchased with cell service (does not need to be activated). If it is a WiFi-only version, you can still use Bluetooth to pair it with a standalone GPS device.
- What if I’m experiencing app issues? If you are having problems getting the app to work, try deleting it and doing a fresh download.
- Is there a browser version of the app? Here is the link to the browser version of the app: cumbres.stqry.app. This does not use location services.
